In the Gospel of John and the book of Revelation, Jesus makes statements about Himself that reveal who He is and what He came to do.

These I AM statements reveal the nature of Jesus and His heart for people, helping us know Him more: “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35), “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6), “I am the vine” (John 15:5), and “I am the Alpha and Omega” (Revelation 21:6).

In this series, we will discover that the I AMs are more than just statements; they help us know how we can respond to Jesus and know Him more deeply as our life-giver, our way to God, our source of abiding, our beginning and end.

As you read through the I AMs, be prepared to have your own prejudgments about Jesus and who He is challenged. What will He show you?

Series Invitation

Recently I had a meeting with someone I had known for quite a while. He was someone I knew from church, but I had never had the opportunity to speak to him in depth. Admittedly, I went into the meeting with prejudgment. I thought I already knew what kind of person he was—but boy, was I wrong.

He was much more than the image I had locked in my mind. He told me stories of tragedy and faith that blew me away. Have you ever had that happen to you? Have you ever had an idea of who someone is that turned out to be false?

In the I AMs series, we will see Jesus use events and ideas the people were already familiar with to reveal Himself to the world. He used things from their past, events in their world, and even imagery from their own questions and thoughts.

In many ways, Jesus’ I AM statements cause people to confront their preconceived ideas about Him. The people encountering Jesus thought they already knew who God is. But what Jesus revealed in His I AMs blew their minds. Like I did with my friend, we all might find ourselves at the end of this series saying, “I was wrong about Him.”

As you read through the I AMs, be prepared to have your own prejudgments about Jesus and who He is challenged. What will He show you?
